With the current concerns around the spread of the COVID-19 virus, much of our focus has been on how to make better standards of health and hygiene more accessible to vulnerable South African women. Susters4Life is proud to be part of the #pads4ourgirls initiative – a campaign to provide reusable cloth sanitary pads to indigenous KhoiSan girls in remote and rural areas.
Providing Sanitary Pads to Indigenous Girls
At the start of 2020, we partnered with the prominent KhoiSan leader Q7, known as a local indigenous revolutionary. Earlier this year, Q7 raised funds for reusable cloth sanitary pads to be donated to Khoi and San girls, by making a sponsored walk from Graaf Reinet to De Rus, Dysseldorp, Oudtshoorn and finally Cape Town.
Through this initiative, Q7 was able to support many teenage girls who don’t have access to regular sanitary pads or disposal facilities. Each girl received a set of two washable fabric pads, sewn by the hard-working women who are part of the Susters4Life sewing programmes. A nurse accompanied him to make the donations, to help ensure that each girl understood why and how to use the pads. A huge thank you to all those who donated and supported Q7’s journey! For R99 you can provide a pack of 3 reusable pads to a girl child.
Menstrual Products are a Human Right
We strongly believe that access to safe, affordable menstrual hygiene products is a human right that every girl and woman deserves. We are so proud to have participated in the #pads4ourgirls initiative, and we aim to keep helping many more local young women in this way in the months and years to come.
